You can grow anywhere from here, even if you never leave
We’ve heard this phrase our whole lives, usually with an unspoken ending: as long as you leave.
But Dirt Road Roots offers a fuller truth:
You can go anywhere from here.
And you can stay here and still grow.
Growth doesn’t always look like departure. Sometimes it looks like stewardship. Sometimes it looks like choosing not to abandon what raised you just to be taken seriously.
“Country” is Cultural Intelligence
There’s a certain kind of knowledge you don’t get from books.
You get it from watching hands. From listening longer than you speak.
From learning how to make do, stretch, and fix instead of discard.
That’s country intelligence.
Dirt Road Roots, the origin story
Some ideas come from planning. This one came from paying attention.
Back in 2019, I was in Waynesboro, Georgia, helping host a career readiness and job fair with a family friend who had been doing economic justice work in the area for years. The focus was simple: help people who had been locked out of opportunity get access again. Folks coming home from incarceration. Folks trying to clear records. Folks who just needed a real chance.
It wasn’t fancy. It was practical. It mattered.
